allison, you've written this book about michelle obama, what would michelle do. last night she the did perhaps what many expected but took it to a whole other level. >> what would michelle do? she would look fabulous doing whatever she does. that's what she did in her speech. she reminded people who her husband really is and that he hadn't changed from that community activist that started in chicago who has a genuine concern for people's well-being. what she showed is she still had the confidence in him to make sure the country gets where he needs to go. he needs four more years. she reminded the country that's what the country needs to give him. >> many people said the first lady was referring to governor romney. let me play it. >> he's the same man hop started his career by turning down high-paying jobs and instead working in struggling neighborhoods where a see plant had shut down, fighting to rebuild those communities and get folks back to work. because for bra rack, success isn't about how much money you make. it's about the difference you make in people's l

i think that michelle obama gave a great speech tonight. but there are some really big takeaways here from the democrat national convention. that's what you didn't hear tonight. first of all, you didn't hear president obama or any of his surrogates tonight talking about the fact that americans are not better off than they were four years ago. there's been all kinds of discussions about whether we are better off than we were four year ace go. the reason we went six hours without having one surrogate -- >> would you agree that we are better off than we were 3 1/2 years ago? >> no. because we still have 23 million people unemployed. >> the first half year of barack obama obama was just a financial meltdown. brought on by eight years of republican administration. >> let's go back and look at his promises. we can look at his promises from his convention speh four years ago where he said he was going to create more jobs and get the debt down. i think it is very symbolic of something you didn't hear. the national debt reached $16 trillion. that's

that is michelle obama. we have to remember that most first ladies until the television age never gave a speech. among those who have, there has never been a speaker who could deliver what we just saw. it was not a terribly partisan speech. it did not get into nitty gritty divisive politics, the details in politics. she did make some very simple statements about what her husband has delivered in office. what you had in the room was a real powerful connection. it was tangible. it is real. and it is very hard to judge this from where i'm standing but it felt like she was delivering it onscreen also. it was very difficult to be introducing barack obama but it did have that element of introduction. framed in terms of reminder. one of the most striking passages was when she went into a refrain about why she loves barack obama. that is a difficult piece of writing to, for a wife to say publicly. this is why i love this man. it is difficult to make it convincing in a context, in an arena like this. it was, i think,
